Okay how do we motivate ourselves from within? When we were children, maybe we tried to learn something new like riding a bike. When after having learned it, perhaps unconsciously, we reaffirmed ourselves-we say to ourselves we have learned something new and challenging. We have become competent.

Competence and even just the feeling of competence can give birth to motivation. So that is where you can start. So maybe you want to try something new-exercise, school, a new sport or a new job. But maybe, you feel you can't motivate yourself. Well, you can start with your skills and talents.

Motivational Techniques

Skills and talents are the vital components of competence. Even it is just so basic like being able to read-you can turn that into a foothold for motivating yourself from within. Of course, extrinsic motivations can be helpful. Grades, self-rewards and praise from others can be very refreshing and revitalizing. However, there are times, when these are not enough. We need to find the reasons from inside us, from within.

So how do you do that? Okay, first think of a skill or a talent. Remember the time you first learned that skill or used that talent. So, you can imagine the feeling and situation once again how hard it seemed at first. Then also recall the time afterwards when you achieved your goal. Establish that feeling within you. Try to make it available for later recall. The technique is when you are already going for your new challenge; then you will be able to recreate all these feelings from within you. So that is a start for motivating yourself.

So begin this exercise, and use it for as long as you need to. Being self-assuring is not a kind of self-deception. You should not fool yourself with positive affirmations in the surface. Positive affirmations are helpful when these come from deep seated beliefs based on experience. The experience you have a child is still helpful indeed.

So in any case, intrinsic motivation is based on this sense of competence. We all need this sense of competence in order to have the will to start at something. You can of course complement these with extrinsic motivating factors, but you have to make sure that most of your motivation comes from within you. This is important, because you can lose quite a lot from without, from the external environment, so you then have to look for what is inside you.

Employee motivation is less about figuring out how to motivate staff and more about learning how to ensure your staff are self-motivated.

At the end of the day, you need staff who are self-motivated. You can't force staff to be motivated just like you can't force them to be happy. What you can do is foster a positive environment where staff understand what the company is trying to achieve and where they buy into the bigger goals of the company and choose to be part of it.

Here are some suggestions for properly motivating employees and fostering an environment where staff will be self-motivated:

    Understand what motivates each of your staff. The first step to motivate employees is to understand what motivates them individually. What motivates one person might not be nearly as important to someone else. Don't assume that each of your staff wants the same thing. Give regular feedback. Even if your company gives formal employee appraisals, offering regular feedback to your staff between these appraisals can be a great way to motivate them. Acknowledging your employees' work and how it has contributed to company goals helps to make staff see the contributions they have made. Give rewards. Money and other similar rewards aren't necessarily great motivators since not everyone is money motivated. After understanding what motivates each of your staff, you might find that giving them more time off, flexible work hours, job sharing, working from home and things of that nature might be more desirable to your staff than monetary rewards. Offer training and employee improvement options. One great way of motivating employees is to stress the importance of their continued learning and to offer ways for them to keep learning. Offering inhouse training or enabling staff to choose selected training courses that the company will pay for are two ways to ensure that staff remain in touch with your business while also illustrating that the company values its employees. Ensure that your staff understand company goals and results. One of the worst things can be to work in a company (especially a large one) and not fully understand what the company's goals are or how the company is doing overall. It's important for managers for ensure that there is an information flow that reaches staff and that relevant information is shared. Don't expect an increase in job performance. When instituting methods to improve staff motivation, don't expect that the result will be an immediate or even noticeable increase in their job performance. Not all staff will react the same way to your motivation efforts and some of your staff may already be performing as best as can be expected. The goal of employee motivation should be to ensure you are doing everything you can as a manager to properly motivate your staff and to provide them with tools they need to succeed but not all of them will react the same way.

Self motivation, who has not needed some good techniques to motivate themselves at one point or another in their life. It could have been getting up out of your bed early in the morning to go to school or work, or go for that daily run even though it's a little cold outside. If you don't want to do an assignment just realize that the sooner you get it over with, is the sooner you can put it in your list of things completed and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

Another good technique would be to strengthen your desire. If it's about losing weight and you don't want to work out think about that dream body you can achieve if you just put in 20 minutes per day of exercise. Sometimes the biggest problem can be lack of energy and you need to do something that will give you an energy boost. Drink some coffee, the caffeine will give you the energy boost you need. Alternatively, you can go outside sometimes just feeling the sunshine and taking in the fresh air can be energizing.

However the easiest self motivation technique of all would be to have better sleep. If you can manage to get at least 5 hours of sleep a day, the quality of it will be more important than the quantity to help rejuvenate your body.

Steps and Tips on Implementing ITIL Problem Management

ITIL defines an "Incident" as any unplanned interruption to an IT service or reduction in the quality of an IT service and ITIL defines a "Problem" as the cause of one or more of those incidents. The primary objectives of taking on Problem Management are to prevent problems and resulting incidents from happening, to eliminate recurring incidents and to minimize the impact of incidents that cannot be prevented. Problem Management is dependent on a mature Incident Management process.

Although it is possible to start early with Problem Management, this process is highly integrated with Incident Management. So, it is best to implement Problem Management after you have implemented Incident Management. You will require incident data, impact, frequency and incident trends to help identify relevant and worthwhile Problems to work on eventually.

Motivational Techniques

It is often possible to start with Problem Management activities, without having a formally defined Problem Management process. Rather than getting bogged down with the activities related to process design, implementation of supporting tools and documentation at the start of the project, consider going for quick wins. You could start with actions like the following:

* Identify the top 5 to 10 incidents

* If needed, provide guidance to incident management/service desk on how to record - incidents

* Find some problems and solve them!

A key activity in Problem Management is to look for the root cause of one or more incidents and recommend a permanent fix. Choosing the right people for the job is crucial. Analytical people with the right technology background are best given such roles. This need not be a permanent role. If fact, most organisation do not assign someone to be "THE Problem Manager". Problem managers are best identified and assigned based on the problem(s) at hand. Sometimes, a task force could be appointed, instead of a single person. Besides technical skills, the assigned Problem Manager(s) would preferably have problem-solving skills and experience with techniques like Kepner Tregoe, Pain-Value Analysis and using of Ishikawa diagrams to perform fault isolation and problem solving.

At some stage, the process would need to be designed, documented and formally rollout throughout the organisation. IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) would provide an excellent framework and guidance for defining the process activities and steps. Roles and Responsibility for Problem Management needs to be formally defined and a process owner needs to be assigned for this process. The responsibility of the process owner would be to ensure that the process is documented, role and responsibilities are clear and well communicated, people are using the process and there is focus on continual improvement to the process. Reports and metrics have to be defined. Examples include:

* Number of Problems and Known Errors in a period by status, service or category.

* Percentage of Problems which have been solved per category and period.

* Average time taken to find root cause per category.

* Average resolution time of Problems and Known Errors per category.

* Effort invested in Problems pending resolution and expected effort required for closure per period (as measured by resolution time).

* Number of Problems that re-occur. Unlike Incident Management metrics like "percentage solved within target time",

Problem Management metrics are typically not included explicitly in Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Setting up a Known Error Database (KEDB) is another key activity. A Known Error is a Problem that has a documented root cause and workaround or solution. The KEDB maintains information about problems (i.e., isolation and resolution procedures) and the appropriate workarounds, scripts, references to patches, FAQs and resolutions. The KEDB or knowledge database must facilitate flexible retrieval of information, preferably by keyword search.

However, the KEDB may not add much value if the Incident Management process is too immature to efficiently use them. Many organizations have set up a KEDB system, without real success, due to the fact that the Incident Management or Service Desk staff was too immature to help capture information and use the system to aid in first-line diagnostics. So, setting up a KEDB system in itself is not enough. A knowledge management mindset and culture is needed as well. Incentives and metrics would have to be introduced to motivate the right behaviour in Incident and Problem management staff.

Implement a tool to support the creation and tracking of Problem and Known Error records should be considered.  Given the close dependency between the Incident and Problem Management, integration of incident and problem management workflow and data records in the tool is important. Most commercially available tools like BMC's Remedy or HP's Service Manager comes with separately purchasable but integrated modules for Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management and a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to store the system management records and also Configuration Item (CI) information.

Lastly, like any other ITIL processes, the Problem Management process should then go through the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycles and improved and refined over time.

Obesity plays a big role in our society today. Exercise and eating right are a way to fight obesity. But how do you motivate yourself to exercise? Let's face it; it isn't one of the most enjoyable things do to with our time.

And time is very important to us today. There never seems to be enough of it. So how do we get exercise motivation? Setting goals is the key to this process.

Motivational Techniques

The first step in achieving exercise motivation is to decide what goals you want from yourself. Do you want to lose 10 pounds? 20 pounds? Or do you just want to tone your body?

The next question to ask yourself is what are you going to gain from these goals? If you like the answers you're getting from these questions, then you are half way to exercise motivation!

When setting goals for exercise motivation, try not to set them to high. Don't set a goal to lose 50 pounds, unless you can afford to lose 50 pounds! Don't set a goal to run 5 miles a day, if you have never run a mile before.

Be realistic in your goal setting. This is so important in this process. The goals have to be both possible and realistic for you to be able to achieve them.

After the goals are set, write down what steps you are going to have to take to reach these goals. For instance, do you need to stop eating dessert every night after dinner? Do you need to give up that second cappuccino in the mornings? Can you walk to work or lunch, instead of driving? Once you come up with a plan to change the way you do things, it will be easier to lose weight.

The next step is to be creative with your exercise routine. Getting on a treadmill in a lonely room isn't going to keep us motivated for very long. Maybe you need to put a television in the room with the treadmill. Or maybe find a route outdoors for your walk or run.

Commitment is the last and final stage to achieving exercise motivation. You have lost ten pounds and are starting to eat a healthier diet, now you have to commit to doing it. Make time every day and don't let temptations get in the way. It is all in the will power.

That is not to say that you can't reward yourself with a day off of exercise once in a while, or a piece of cake now and then. That is important also, but being consistent with your exercise routine is priority. It will soon become habitual to exercise. You have just replaced your bad habits with a good habit!

I wanted to share with you some of the best persuasive techniques that are available to people. Despite what you might think, everyone has some degree of persuasive powers, but some have more than others. Most of us use these techniques in an unconscious manner. There are others that happen to understand how these work and consciously wage a war to persuade you in such a way to do what they want. Once you've got the data, try cutting out 30 minutes of TV or video games and substituting that with study.

Also, you can start setting your clock 5 minutes on Monday, then 10 minutes earlier on Tuesday, and so on, in order to start going to bed earlier. Get up 5 minutes earlier on Monday, then 10 minutes earlier on Tuesday, and so on. Use that extra time as an investment in study.

Be Creative With Your Senses

In this day of smart phones and video, you can harness your senses to truly retain the information you study. Here's an example: take notes, read them into your smart phone recorder, and then listen to them later while running or working out. I used this method in grad school to ace many tests. Because I combined both my seeing and auditory senses, I was better able to absorb the information in front of me.

Finances? Injuries? Too stressed for time?

Exercise motivation is often lost for a variety of reasons. But while there may be many excuses for giving up a workout program, there is often a greater, underlying reason why a student gives up--especially in Martial Arts practice.

Motivational Techniques

It is simply that motivation got misplaced.

And a good instructor can help a student get beyond the experience of losing exercise motivation. How? I've learned over my three decades in the Martial Arts that loss of exercise motivation in training almost always comes down to something I call

"Expectation of Competency Level."

An odd choice of words, I'll admit. But if your serious about training in the Martial Arts, read on. I think you'll be as fascinated by this concept as I was when I discovered it!

Understanding Three Essential Components Of Martial Arts Training

There are three essential components to any kind of Martial Arts Training:

  1. The Competency Level Of The Student
  2. The Student's Own Expectations
  3. Creative Variation

All Martial Arts students have basically the same goal: To get good at what they are learning, and to be able to use their new skills in either a real self-defense situation or a tournament.

And all good Martial Arts instructors have those same goals for their students. But sometimes the goal of the instructor doesn't mesh with the expectations of the student. You see, the instructor is particularly concerned with the competency level of the student. That is, teaching the student to perform specific skills at a certain skill level.

Most Martial Arts students enter their training with the expectation that they will learn some sort of techniques and strategies...but...once they have learned those techniques and strategies at the level of Conscious Competence, they want to move on to the next technique.

The expectation of the student is, "If I've memorized and learned how to do the technique, I should be able to test and move on to the next belt level."

Conscious Competence Vs. Unconscious Competence

But students who have achieved Conscious Competence with a technique or skill should never be allowed to advance to the next level. And if they have a good instructor, they won't. All good, qualified Martial Arts teachers know that skills acquired at the level of Conscious Competence won't carry over into either real self-defense situations or tournament competition. Those require skills at the level of Unconscious Competence.

Unconscious Competence is a skill level beyond having just learned and memorized a technique. It is experienced when you have achieved a detailed memory and understanding of how to perform the technique such that it becomes a reflex.

The problem is, to get from Conscious Competence to Unconscious Competence requires about twice the amount of training time, and many students simply don't have the patience to practice a technique for that long beyond the level of Conscious Competence. They've learned it; they understand how it works. Now they want to move on and learn something new. If they don't, the class becomes boring. They slack off, start to lose exercise motivation, attend fewer training sessions, never rising beyond Conscious Competence, and, when the boredom gets to be too much, their motivation is gone. They quit.

For them, Martial Arts was fun for a little while, but, they usually say, "It just wasn't my thing."

And the same loss of exercise motivation will happen to you...to me...to any student under the same circumstances, no matter what you're learning, and no matter who's teaching you.

Creative Variation: The Key To Staying Motivated

So, what can you do to avoid losing Martial Arts, or for that matter, any type of exercise motivation?

First, acquire an understanding from your teacher of how much time you can expect between belt tests. And second, understand that only the first half of that time will be spent learning a new, fun, and interesting skill. The second half of that time will be spent honing that skill from the level of Conscious Competence to Unconscious Competence.

But that second half of the training does not have to be boring!

A Message For Teachers: You Can Keep Your Students From Losing Motivation. Here's How...

Teachers, you can easily keep students interested in the classes by laying out the time and competency expectations in advance, and by using the second half of that time to add more variety to the learning.

Adding variety means more than just incorporating games into the training sessions, or tossing in techniques from the latest Martial Arts fads. Rather, it means offering a Creative Variation of the same techniques they are already doing.

For example, at the beginner level of the Wu Ying Tao system, during the first month of training, the student learns a set of nine basic punches, three basic kicks, and blocking defenses for each.

By one month into the training, the student has usually achieved Conscious Competence of the skill involved in standing in a correct fighting stance, stepping into range, and executing the attacks and the defensive moves.

But now, the student is going to have to spend another full month of training in order for these skills to become ingrained. Instead of coming away from each class feeling excited over having learned something new, he might start coming away feeling like Martial Arts training involves a brief introduction to interesting concepts, followed by long series boring repetitions. That is, once the concept is no longer new, it simply becomes a drill to be done over and over, and quite frankly, yes, that does get pretty boring!

Keeping the "eye on the prize" can help, of course, by reminding the student that in only one more month, he or she will have the skill level to take and pass the test.

But there's another way. A better way.

With Creative Variation, you would, perhaps, change the method of practicing the punches from punching with the rear hand to using the front hand.

Yes, I know, this is a simple variation, but it's not so simple to a student at the beginner level, either for doing the attacks or the defenses. It opens up a whole new phase of learning what is essentially the same skill, and at the same time, brings variety into the learning process and actually enhances the student's exercise motivation.

After one month of basic punching, followed by a second month of doing the same thing, but with a Creative Variation, the student's skills will have arrived at the level of Unconscious Competency.

Students stay motivated. And you enjoy the experience of teaching.

Martial Arts training should always be a fun and interesting experience. While exercise motivation can be a challenge, you can avoid "burn out" by using Creative Variation to work your students' way from simply being able to perform a skill at Conscious Competence to having the deeper understanding and reflexive proficiency of performing at the level of Unconscious Competence.

All it takes is a little time, a little understanding, and remembering to make your training experience fun!

Keep your aim in mind. Now you know what needs to happen in order for you to achieve your aim, take the steps you just planned. They're no good just in your head; you have to do something about them. So take that class, make that appointment; arrange that bank loan or whatever you need to do.

4. Keep Re-visiting your Aim and the Actions you Planned in Order to Achieve it

That enables you to stay clear about your aim, but don't be a slave to the exact aim. If it's not working for you, change it. Scale it down, or make it bigger. Make it motivate you again. After all, that aim is yours; you can do whatever you want with it. Knowing what you want will concentrate your energies and you won't waste time on doing things that won't help you achieve it.

Re-assessing your original aim will give you greater motivation for the difficult times that may be ahead. You'll see it's still something worth working for, and you'll see what benefits success will bring. You'll also see how far you've come towards achieving your goal.

5. Take time to celebrate those achievements

Notice when you have fulfilled one of your targets. It will keep you motivated and keep you focused as each target builds on the previous one.

Perhaps most importantly of all, looking back at what you want to achieve will help you see what you need to do next. You can achieve your dreams. Sometimes that will need a little help, sometimes it will need a lot, but you can do it. Your future is in your own hands and that should be a very motivating thought.
